We are pleased to invite you to participate in a round table discussion titled Where the Ukrainian Heart Beats. Ukrainian Communities in Latin American Countries.
This roundtable continues the series of events on Ukraine’s interaction with the global Ukrainian community and the role of the diaspora in preserving national identity, shaping a positive image of Ukraine, and supporting the state during the full-scale war. The first roundtable, held on 26 June, outlined the key trends, challenges, and potential of Ukrainian communities worldwide. The second event expands this discussion by focusing on Ukrainian centres in Latin American countries.
The purpose of the event is to create a platform for discussing the current state, peculiarities, and potential of Ukrainian communities in Latin America and their contribution to supporting Ukraine, as well as to develop recommendations for further cooperation between the diaspora, Ukrainian institutions, and local partners.
Key discussion points
- Cultural diplomacy and identity preservation, the role of the diaspora in promoting Ukrainian culture and language, implementation of cultural events, cooperation with educational and artistic institutions.
- Civic engagement and support for Ukraine during the war: volunteer initiatives, information outreach, partnership projects with local organizations and businesses.
- Institutional cooperation with Ukraine: needs and expectations of Ukrainian communities, opportunities for structured communication with Ukrainian diplomatic missions, proposals for improving state policy on diaspora affairs.
- Potential for cooperation in the fields of economy, education, and interregional partnership: exchange programmes, building connections, support for Ukrainian businesses, and promotion of Ukraine’s interests in the region.
The roundtable aims to bring together representatives of Ukrainian communities abroad with experience in public diplomacy, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, Ukraine’s diplomatic missions in Latin American countries, researchers, academics, civil society activists, and others. The involvement of all these stakeholders will help foster networking, exchange proposals, discuss current challenges and identify ways to address them. Participants will have an opportunity to reflect on the present and future of this partnership, articulate their expectations of one another, and outline what effective cooperation should look like.
