Workshop on making a straw didukh — one of the oldest Ukrainian Christmas talismans

The word didukh literally means ‘grandfather’s spirit’. The custom of crafting this ritual object dates back to pre-Christian times, when people believed that ancestral spirits lived in the harvest and protected family prosperity. This talisman symbolises the harvest and prosperity in Ukrainian culture and carries deep sacred significance. A Christmas decoration made of ears of grain embodies the connection between generations, respect for ancestors, and family well-being. Traditionally, people placed the didukh in a place of honour on Christmas Eve to invite the spirits of forebears to the festive table, as a gesture of gratitude for the harvest.

Participants will have an excellent opportunity to learn the techniques of weaving a didukh, to work with prepared straw, and to combine different types of grain to create a cohesive composition. During the workshop, each participant will craft a sheaf from rye, wheat, oats, and flax, and give it a festive appearance. The session will also offer various decorative options to create a unique composition tailored to individual taste. A didukh made by hand and placed before Christmas Eve will become a charming decoration for your home throughout the festive season.

The event will take place in the cosy atmosphere of a creative studio in central Kyiv, filled with light, inspiration, and the spirit of Ukrainian traditions.
