Badminton competition among diplomats

On Saturday, 5 July 2025, on the occasion of the International Badminton Day, a competition took place, which brought together representatives of the Embassies of Austria, Belgium, Germany, Indonesia, and Palestine.

Badminton united experienced players and beginners alike, as this dynamic and elegant Olympic sport does not require sophisticated equipment or lengthy training, and all participants had the opportunity to choose a pace of play that suited them.

To ensure the participants’ comfort, the organisers provided indoor courts, sports equipment, and professional coaching support if needed.

Artem Pochtarov, Ukrainian badminton player; Robin Herrero, Deputy Head of Mission of Belgium; Anan Bsharat, Palestinian Embassy staff member; Robert Müller, Ambassador of Austria; Maximilian Tonner, Economic and Energy Counsellor of the German Embassy

The tournament ended with the following results: Nguyễn Đức Anh, First Secretary of the Embassy of Vietnam, and Thomas Schwartz, Counsellor of the German Embassy, claimed first place. Robin Herrero, Deputy Head of Mission of Belgium, and Anan Bsharat, staff member of the Embassy of Palestine, took second place. The third place went to Artem Romaniuk, Deputy GDIP Director-General, and Volodymyr Lebediev, a household services specialist from the Dipservice Directorate’s accommodation department. All winners and participants were presented with trophies and certificates — well-deserved honours for their agility and sportsmanship.

The competition offered a fantastic chance to spend an active day, enjoy casual conversation with colleagues, and deepen friendly ties. Thanks to the combination of sport, communication, and good humour, the event was a vivid example of sports diplomacy in action.
