Street art has long outgrown its reputation as mere teenage mischief and has become a recognised form of contemporary art. Thanks to this art movement, the walls and facades of buildings have become canvases for talented artists seeking to add brightness to gloomy industrial landscapes. Since 2014, Kyiv has embraced this trend, and today it boasts over 170 murals — one of which ranks among the world’s top seven, according to the Dutch publication Street Art Today. Talented artists from Ukraine, Argentina, Australia, Canada, Portugal, Spain, and the UK have created striking portraits, landscapes, and abstract pieces on city walls. Most murals are designed to draw attention to important topics and pressing issues, such as war and the Ukrainian people’s fight for freedom and independence. Social messages reflecting the problems in modern society are often encoded in them. During the tour, you will discover the history of the creation of murals, find out street art’s origins and evolution, and explore why it is being created in the first place. We will stroll through an open-air exhibition with an experienced guide who will introduce you to the most exciting works by foreign and Ukrainian mural artists.
