The National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy is a state educational institution that, following the traditions of the Ostroh Academy, upholds the legacy of Ukrainian higher education and is among the oldest universities in Ukraine. It ranks ninth in the consolidated rating of the country’s universities. The Academy’s history dates back to the founding of the School of Kyiv’s Brotherhood in 1615. Petro Mohyla later merged it with the Lavra’s School into a Collegium that eventually obtained the status of an academy. It was an educational institution, innovative for its time, and an intellectual hub respected not just in Ukraine but across Europe. The Academy’s alumni were the people who shaped our history, science, and culture, including Ivan Mazepa, Pylyp Orlyk, Hryhorii Skovoroda, Ivan Hryhorovych-Barskyi, and many other outstanding individuals of that era.
During the guided tour, you will walk the halls of the historic buildings and the cosy courtyard, see the oldest civil building in Kyiv where the Academy’s history began, the exquisite Baroque-style Old Academy building, and the antique 18th-century sundial. Afterwards, you will also walk the corridors of the main New Academy building. An experienced guide will provide you with an engaging narrative of Mohyla Academy’s past and present, including its periods of decline and revival. You will learn about its students, its rhetoric teachers and theologians, and students’ entertainment and antics. You will learn about all its secrets and get a glimpse of the passage of centuries contained within its walls. The highlight of the tour will be the visit to the Museum of Ukrainian Achievements. Its exhibition traces the Academy’s history, its revival, and its development since 1991. We kindly invite you to discover the remarkable history of one of Kyiv’s oldest universities.
