On Monday, 16 March 2026, the Media Center Directorate of the State Enterprise ‘Directorate-General for Rendering Services to Diplomatic Missions’ began hosting the painting exhibition titled Blackbird. The creator of the displayed paintings is Kamilla Kristensen Rai, counsellor on water and environment of the Embassy of the Kingdom of Denmark.
The artistic gathering was attended by the staff of the embassies of China, Denmark, and Sweden, representatives of international and non-governmental organizations, media, artists, and students.
Blackbird is the artist’s third exhibition. It marks the arrival of spring with the display of 15 paintings, in which a blackbird embodies spring and new beginnings. It takes the viewer along with the bird through different dimensions of life in Ukraine: into the woods, into the darkness of night, into the wartime city, and into spring.
The art event began with speeches by Romana Kasiianchuk, the acting director of the Media Center, and Kamilla Kristensen Rai, the artist and counsellor on water and environment at the Embassy of the Kingdom of Denmark.
‘Dear guests! We are very pleased to welcome you to the GDIP Media Center for the opening of the Blackbird exhibition, which symbolizes the arrival of spring and the idea of renewal; the blackbird is our guide through different landscapes and experiences of life in Ukraine. I am especially pleased to welcome Kamilla to our space; we highly value our long-term cooperation and hope that today’s exhibition will be another step in our dialogue through art,’
Romana Kasiianchuk said.
During her speech, Kamilla spoke about the title of the art exhibition, which features 15 paintings, and explained their plots, symbolism, and styles. Each painting tells a complete story, and all the works are harmoniously linked by one character: a blackbird who observes and sometimes participates in the events.
‘The Blackbird exhibition symbolizes the awakening of spring in two respects: It is spring after a cold and difficult winter, when many people in Ukraine were left without heating, electricity, and water, in freezing temperatures, and at the same time, it is spring as a reminder of a new beginning. The blackbird also represents transformation and hope for a better future. […] The scale and colours may seem odd to you, but we can still feel what the blackbird is experiencing in the paintings,’
the artist explained.
The paintings depict the journey of a blackbird in stages: from snow to forest, through the night in the city of war, and on to spring.
These 15 paintings reflect what I have been experiencing in Ukraine since around the summer of 2025,’
Ms Kamilla added, emphasising that her own experiences found their artistic reflection in the events witnessed by the protagonist.
The guests of the art event were extremely impressed by the vivid plots of the paintings and their emotional saturation. At the end of the presentation, the artist thanked everyone who joined her exhibition. Afterwards, the participants enjoyed a cordial and informal conversation.
