Like an Open-Air Gallery: Diplomats Viewed the Murals of Kyiv

On Saturday, 14 June 2025, employees of the Media Center Directorate organised the Kyiv Murals walking tour for the employees of the Embassies of Belgium, Denmark, and the United Kingdom, and representatives of the European Union, United Nations, International Organisation for Migration, and the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees in Ukraine.

During the tour, the participants examined the features of the development of Ukrainian street art, learned about the thematic wealth of the murals, and heard fascinating stories about the creation of each wall masterpiece. An experienced guide took the diplomats on a journey through an open-air street gallery, where they could see the most interesting wall paintings by artists from Ukraine, Argentina, Australia, Belgium, Canada, Poland, Portugal, and Spain.

The works of famous Ukrainian street sculpture master Kostiantyn Skrytutskyi attracted special attention, while a mural by British street artist Banksy left the biggest impression on the group. Banksy’s unique style is easily recognisable as his works address burning social issues and speak the language of visual protest.

The guests were in awe of the thematic diversity and dramatism of Kyiv’s street art, which opened up the deeper meanings of contemporary Ukrainian history, showed the cultural heritage through the lens of art, and allowed the viewers to experience the feelings and worries of Ukrainians as captured by foreign and Ukrainian artists.
