The History of the City in the Language of Murals: A Tour of Kyiv for Diplomats

On Saturday, 27 June 2026, employees of the Media Center Directorate conducted the walking tour titled Murals of the historical centre of Kyiv, which was attended by representatives of the embassies of Canada and Sweden, as well as international organisations — UNHCR, NATO, and the World Bank.

During the tour, the diplomats discovered the history of mural creation, learned about street art’s origins and evolution, and explored its role in shaping modern urban space. The guide explained how street art transforms ordinary buildings into open-air exhibitions and how artists encode social messages or ideas in their works.

The route strolled through the capital’s most exciting locations, featuring works by foreign and Ukrainian mural artists. The participants saw murals by artists from Australia, Argentina, Belgium, Spain, Canada, Poland, and Portugal. Also, they got acquainted with the work of the famous Ukrainian sculptor and designer Kostiantyn Skrytutskyi, the author of many iconic street sculptures in Kyiv.

The tour allowed participants to take a fresh look at the urban space, discovering it as a centre of contemporary art, historical memory, and public dialogue. The diplomats not only familiarised themselves with outstanding examples of street art but also recognised the important role of murals in preserving cultural heritage, shaping national identity, and drawing attention to pressing issues and current events.
