On Saturday, 14 March 2026, the team of the GDIP Media Center Directorate organized a workshop entitled The Art of Botanical Illustration for diplomats. The event brought together staff members of the Embassies of Denmark and Sweden, as well as representatives of the United Nations Human Settlements Programme.
Botanical illustration is a distinctive artistic genre that combines scientific accuracy with a skilful painterly rendering of the form, colour and finest details of plants, highlighting their natural elegance and delicate beauty.
Under the guidance of an experienced artist, the workshop participants explored ways of conveying the beauty of botany, focusing on the details: the gentle curve of a leaf, the light shadow on a stem, and the transparency and delicacy of flower petals.
In this creative atmosphere, the foreign guests were introduced to the fundamentals of watercolour painting, learned about the principles of creating depth and volume, and discovered techniques for delicately blending colours. To inspire their work, the participants were offered a selection of aesthetic references, from which they could choose a composition to their liking and create a unique artwork of their own.
All the necessary materials, including professional watercolour paper, paints, and brushes, were provided by the organizers. The workshop took place in the creative and relaxed setting of an art studio, accompanied by pleasant music that encouraged concentration and inspiration. In this harmonious space, every line and every brushstroke gradually came together to form a distinctive original piece.
Participation in this creative event provided the diplomats with a wonderful opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of the structure and colouring of plants, as well as to immerse themselves in the fascinating world of watercolour painting. The event gave participants a chance to unleash their creative potential and spend time in the pleasant company of like-minded people.
