On Saturday, 24 October 2026, the Media Center Directorate team held a unique Wine Painting workshop for diplomats. The creative event brought together representatives of the embassies of Denmark, Norway, and Switzerland, as well as UNICEF in Ukraine.
Painting with wine is a distinctive technique in which wine is used instead of traditional paints. Its natural pigments create striking shades on paper — from delicate pink and terracotta to rich burgundy and deep brown. The colour depends on the type of wine, its concentration, the number of layers applied, and the properties of the paper. The shades may change after drying, giving the works a particular depth and distinctiveness.
During the workshop, participants learned the basics of this technique, whose methods resemble those of watercolour painting. Using brushes and red wine, they created monochrome pieces on special paper, experimenting with colour intensity and layering. An experienced artist explained how to work with wine as an artistic medium, covering techniques for applying it to paper and the basic principles of composition. Each participant could choose a subject from the reference images provided to bring their own creative idea to life. Floral compositions, still lifes, grape motifs, landscapes, and other delicate artistic images were particularly striking in this technique.
A wine-painting workshop is an opportunity to discover new facets of creativity, see familiar things from a different perspective, and realize that art is not limited to traditional materials. Each guest had the chance to create an original work of art that will make a wonderful addition to their home decor.
A highlight of the event was a photo session against the backdrop of a unique cityscape, with St Sophia’s Cathedral — one of the capital’s most important sacred landmarks — at its centre. The event took place in a cosy atmosphere of creativity and inspiration, with rosé wine and sweet treats adding to the participants’ enjoyment.
